What is a Dad?

A dad is someone who wants to
catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up, brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who wants to
keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail.

United Methodist Response: Helping Others After the Earthquake in Nepal

United Methodists joined Christians around the world in a prayerful response to the earthquake that has claimed thousands of lives in Nepal and neighboring China and India.  BBC News reported the death toll at 4,000 people, with at least 7,000 injuries by as the Nepalese army and police undertook massive search and rescue operations.  Many were living in “vast tent cities” in the capital of Kathmandu as aftershocks from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake continued.

How Eylau UMC can help:

PRAY, PRAY, and continue to PRAY for:

• Comfort for all who have lost loved ones

• Healing for those injured in the quake;

• Rescue for any remaining survivors-that God would direct relief workers to their whereabouts;

• Protection and safety for the community and all aid workers

• Gratitude for the outpouring of generosity from the international community and for a continuation of that generous spirit

• God’s peace and order to reign in the midst of the chaos

• Wisdom and strength for cleanup and rebuilding of the community;

• As the Spirit leads you.

Donate to the UMCOR ADVANCE for this response:  Churches and individuals can make donation to the UMCOR INTERNATIONAL DIASTER RESPONSE #982450.  UMCOR has authorized an initial $90,000 for emergency relief in Nepal.  As of April 28, there is not a specific Nepal Advance Number.  A Direct Nepal advance number will be created once UMCOR evaluates the long term rebuilding efforts necessary for the people of Nepal.

Assemble UMCOR Health, Layette or School Kits.   Organize a group to put together Health Kits, Layette Kits and School Kits (NO Cleaning Kits, Birthing Kits or Bedding Kits at this time).

Find the contents of these kits complete with videos on how to assemble them for delivery at ttp://www.umcor.org/UMCOR/Relief-Supplies.

We request that you transport your collectionto Fair Haven UMC at 1330 Gessner Rd. Houston TX 77055, Phone (713) 468-3276 on May 14 or 15. TACCOR will arrange delivery to UMCOR that weekend.

Staying Spiritually Fit

Prayer is like exercise: Neither is an end in itself. Just as exercise is intended to make us physically fit by strengthening our muscles so we can manage more activity, engaging in prayer leads to more prayer. The harder one works at exercise, the greater the results. But if we give up the routine, the results won’t hold. The same goes for prayer.

Writes Rev. Kate Braestrup in Beginner’s Grace (Atria Books), “There will be no moment — in this life, anyway — when I will be able to say, ‘That’s it! I’ve prayed, and the prayers have paid off: I’m a fully conscious, totally grateful, and unstintingly generous person. I can just start stuffing myself as soon as the plate hits the table.”

Rather, she notes, “The more you give, the more you will be able to give; the more you receive, the more you will be willing to receive; and the more you pray, the more you can … pray.”

Living for God in a Secular Culture

In a culture like ours that’s becoming increasingly secular, increasingly anti-God, your experience of Him may be the only one the next generation will ever see.

How will you use the Life God has given to you?  How will you contribute; how will you share your Christian experiences, pointing upcoming generations to God’s plan for salvation?  Will your walk with God bring glory to Him, only for a moment in history, or for generations to come?

God is more than willing to use your life and my life, too, for His purposes.  But the question is this.  Are you willing to put forth the effort required, so as to be used of God?  That's the question.

Dear God, we want to be faithful.  We want to leave a godly legacy for generations to come.  Show us how You have been, are now, and will be working, miraculously in our lives.  Help us, Lord God… open our eyes that we may see.  Open our ears that we may hear and then open our mouths that we might speak Your grace for generations to come, and especially for those who are caught up in secular-ism in our nation today.  You are all Powerful.  You are all Loving.  It is Your plan and only Your plan that brings True Freedom.  We know that.  Show us the best way to spread Your Freedom in a world that seems so anti-God, so dark, and so lost these days.  Show us how in our blessedness we can be a blessing for many.  In the name of Jesus Christ, and with an honest and trusting heart, we ask these things. Amen.

May your life be increasingly blessed as you seek to find ways to reach out to our current generation.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Paula

One Sunday in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd listened to a sermon honoring mothers. Her mother had died some years before, so her father had raised her by himself. Dodd wondered why there wasn’t a day to honor fathers, so she arranged a tribute to her father at a church in Spokane, Washington. The date was June 19, 1910. Many people believe this was the beginning of Father’s Day.

Another account holds that a West Virginia church held a tribute service for fathers in 1908, following a mine explosion that killed 360 men. Regardless of which story is correct, President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to designate a special day to honor fathers. In 1924, he proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
