The Recycling Christian

Christians understand that the Bible tells us the earth is temporary.  No amount of recycling or “thinking green” will forestall the end that God has planned for the earth.  Despite all the best plans of human beings to preserve the planet, there will come a time when the earth and all God has created will be destroyed.  “The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare” (2 Peter 3:10).

The earth itself is winding down in preparation for that cataclysmic event, one that will cause human destructive behaviors toward the environment to pale in comparison.  Romans 8:20-22 speaks of a creation which groans in anticipation of the time when it will be set free from the bondage to the principle of decay.  This is the end we should be looking to and planning for and which should make our evangelistic efforts all the more urgent.  Soda cans can be recycled; people cannot.  Therefore, our Christian efforts should, first and foremost, be toward saving souls.

Even so, Christians should also be concerned about clean air, clean water, and the preservation of natural resources to the best of our ability.  From a Christian perspective, we know that we are called to be good stewards of the earth (Genesis 1:26-28).  So, what does recycling do for us as individuals and for future generations to come?  Well...

1) It adds increased lifespan to area and regional landfills which reduces cost of transportation to landfills outside local region.

2) It provides marketable goods to recyclable end markets to provide future product from recycled material which reduces costs of packaging to us as consumers.

3) It provides jobs in the local region providing taxable revenue in which we all benefit.

4) Once material is buried in a landfill it provides no future purpose in the economy.  But, a constant recycling climate will renew the economical benefit of marketable products in a continuous cycle.

You see, God did create the earth and give human beings dominion over it (Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 8:6-8), and we are to be responsible caretakers of it.  Therefore, Eylau UMC has made the decision to be faithful stewards by recycling.  You will find recycling collection containers throughout the facilities for aluminum cans, paper/cardboard, and plastic.

Please join us in this effort to take responsibility for our little piece of this earth, which has been placed in our care by God, the Creator, Sustainer and Redeemer of all things.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Paula

On Valentine’s Day, we remember that God is the source of all love in the world. His perfect love for us has made all human love possible.
