On Sunday, July 27, our congregation removed their shoes and went barefoot during the Sunday morning service, to remember that not all people have shoes to wear.

- We heard the story of how John Wesley (as the substitute teacher) showed up with no shoes, so as to minister to a little boy who attended school barefoot, because his family could not afford shoes for him!

- We took off our shoes to experience for a short time what it is like to have no shoes to wear.

- And, many in attendance also brought a new (or gently used) pair of shoes to give away.

Why did we do that?  Because people in our community need shoes.  What are we going to do with all those shoes?  Well, we will pack them up and deliver them to Randy Sams’ Ourtreach Shelter in Texarkana, Texas!

We hope that not only were those who participated in the offering blessed, but that those who will receive the shoes will be blessed, as well.

Making Disciples

We invite people to do THREE THINGS a week:

1) Come to a worship service to fall more in love with God and His Word.

2) Go to a small group to love others in community.

3) Serve in a ministry to impact others.

Love God, love others, serve God in the world.

(Simple Church, Eric Geiger)

Greetings, in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ:

Here's a little summer-time food for thought: Did you know that God wills that we be content and peace filled?  He does!

In A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, Eugene H. Peterson maintains that the path to a blessed life is pretty obvious.  He writes:

“Everyone wants to be happy, to be blessed. Too many people are willfully refusing to pay attention to the One who wills our happiness and ignorantly supposing that the Christian way is a harder way to get what they want than doing it on their own.  They are wrong.  God’s ways and God’s presence are where we experience the happiness that lasts.  Do it the easy way.”

Peterson concludes those thoughts by quoting Psalm 128:1 from The Message, the translation he authored: “All you who fear GOD, how blessed you are! how happily you walk on his smooth straight road!”

Have a happy and peace filled summer with the Lord!

British evangelist Alan Redpath suggested these five helpful questions to ask yourself before you speak:

T — Is it True?

H — Is it Helpful?

I — Is it Inspiring?

N — Is it Necessary?

K — Is it Kind?

 To Love Is to Give

The most famous verse in the Bible [John 3:16] begins “For God so loved the world that he gave …. ”  It’s a generosity verse.  I say you can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.  If you want to become a loving person, you have to learn to give.  You spell love G-I-V-E.

—Rick Warren

Children's Corner

One day a little boy asked his pastor-mom why she always bowed her head for a moment before starting to preach. The mother, delighted that her son was so aware of what went on during worship, answered, “I pray for God to help me deliver a good sermon to the people.”

Alas, her delight was short-lived and fizzled at the child’s response: “So why doesn’t God ever answer?”

Burning Bush

In Exodus 3, God speaks to Moses from a bush that is burning but not consumed.  When Moses asks what he should say if the Egyptians questions who sent him to lead the Israelites out of slavery, God states, "I AM WHO I AM."  Centuries later, when people wonder who Jesus is, his answers hint at his divinity: "I AM the light of the world; I AM the good shepherd; I AM the bread of life" and, perhaps most profoundly, "Before Abraham was, I AM" (John 8:58).  On Pentecost, God's Holy Spirit comes upon the apostles as fire.  Thus the burning bush is a powerful symbol of God's presence echoed through time.
