Eylau United Methodist Church

NEWSLETTER (September 2016)

Our Purpose:

Love God - Love Others - Serve God in the World

Greetings in Christ!

I trust this newsletter finds you and your loved ones well, and enjoying the amazing blessings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

How exciting it is to be a part of God’s faithful church!  While there are increasing challenges all around us, isn’t it wonderful to know that we serve a God who is more than up to the task of meeting those challenges?  Yet, while God has all the power in the world, and could easily accomplish all His works without us, we know that He still takes great joy and pleasure in using us to bring honor to His name through victorious living.  We serve God because we love Him, and He loves us because, well, just because!  (Who can really explain the love of God?)

His love leads us to respond to the needs of others around us and to being a willing vessel that God can use, so as, to meet those needs.  And we become just a little bit more like Christ in the process.  Not only do we become more like Him, we must also remember that ministering to the community is a high calling.  It is then no longer a burden to do so, because in reality we are ministering to them as we would do the same for Christ.

Beyond this, anyone who has ever tithed, as well as, given offerings to the House of God can truly testify that God is faithful in supplying the needs for their own individual households.  For we hear in: Malachi 3:10 – ‘Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in My house.  Test Me in this,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.’

It is evident that Eylau UMC has a great heritage of tithing, so as to, support the ministries of the church.  However our ability to do so is becoming an increasing challenge due to financial constraints.

I know we have been in challenging economic times, yet I would like to encourage each one of our members and attendees to remain faithful in giving to this local church which in turn will enable us to do many of the things God has called us to do.

Would you prayerfully give serious consideration to an amount you can give at this time, as well as, what amount you would be willing to give on an ongoing monthly basis as God provides?

Included is a Pledge Card for your convenience.  You may deliver it to the church office or bring it to worship on Commitment Sunday (September 4, 2016) where all will have the opportunity to present their offerings to the Lord.

Thank you for your willingness to do so, and thank you for your ongoing faithfulness to the Lord.

Pack the Pew Sunday

Pact the Pew Sundays happen every 5th Sunday at Eylau United Methodist Church.

It begins with Sunday School for all ages at 9:45 a.m., and continues with our 5th Sunday Singing service at 11:00 a.m.  In addition members are encouraged to F-R-A-N-GELIZE each 5th Sunday by inviting Friends, Relatives, Associates and Neighbors to worship with us.

F-R-A-N-GELISM is another name for Evangelism and it's purpose is to “bring to life” the words in Matthew 28: 19-20 and Acts 1:8.

Matthew 28:19-20 - "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Acts 1:8- "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The next 'Pack the Pew' Sunday is October 30, 2016.

Christ says, “Give me all. … No half-measures are any good. … Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked — the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.”

—C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Eylau United Methodist Women

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose Purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Dear Operation Christmas Child Partners,

Thanks to you and to our Mighty God we collected over 63,000 shoebox gifts(Gospel Opportunities) last year. Our goal for this year for our area is 70,000. Please help us to reach our goal by collecting at least 10% more shoebox gifts than you donated last year. We appreciate all that you do to spread the Gospel through this ministry.

On September 10th, I will share my recent Paraguay shoebox distribution experiences at our Countdown Rally at Cross View BC at 3268 N. FM 2148 in Texarkana. I look forward to seeing you and your guests at this rally. I will be available to share the same presentation with your church groups if you would like for me to do so. I will need to schedule presentations as soon as possible. I will be glad to share how I witnessed children and parents in Paraguay receiving the Gospel through simple shoebox gifts.

Please remember OCC Shoebox Collection Week will be November 14-21 at Cross View Baptist Church. Please pray NOW and until then that God will provide at least 70,000 shoebox gifts from area donors so that more people can come to know the Lord through this ministry. If you can get a prayer group to pray for OCC in your church, please let me know; and I can get our prayer coordinator to give you some guidelines about OCC prayer groups.

Just a reminder: Candy and toothpaste will be allowed in shoebox gifts this year but not next year. Please plan accordingly. I think that customs issues have dictated this change. I would suggest that you still include toothbrushes in your boxes next year because children can still use them to try and keep their teeth clean.

Please let me know if I can assist you in any way as you prepare your shoebox gifts. I appreciate all that you do to serve the Lord through Operation Christmas Child. Remember that the most important thing that goes into every box is PRAYER. Please pray over EVERY box.

The next United Methodist Women's meeting will be on the 3rd Monday in October (the 17th) at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the church.  All women are welcome.

We encourage everyone to continue to fill up their Thank Banks, which will be collected on the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

Peace & Blessings to all,

Carol Stoner

What is Charge Conference?

The United Methodist Church is a connectional system.  No local church exists independently, but all are linked and connected in a system of mutual support and accountability through district, annual conference, jurisdictional conference, and general conference.  According to the laws of the United Methodist Church as set forth in The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, at the local church level, the charge conference is the basic unit in the connectional system.

The date for the Annual Charge Conference is set by the district superintendent, who is the presiding officer. The primary purpose of the charge conference is to review and evaluate the total mission and ministry of the church, receive reports, and adopt goals recommended by the Church Council. Charge conference provides an opportunity to review the ministry of the church over the past year and determine the direction of the church in the coming year, including the election of church leaders and the adoption of the pastors’ salary.

This year, our District Superintendent, Rev Chuck Huffman, has decided that Eylau UMC’s charge conference will be held as part of a cluster with other churches in the Texarkana area. Even so, it will still provide the opportunity to focus on the mission and ministry of Eylau UMC.

Charge Conference will be held at First United Methodist/Texarkana,

Sunday, October 23 at 6:00 p.m.

Please make plans now to attend and learn where we are and where we hope to go next year as the Body of Christ in this place and in this time. Hope to see you there.

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Paula

The Providence of God

The seed was sown long months ago,
And through the winter’s cold and snow,
We trusted that God’s care would bring
The green and tender blade in spring,
Which cherished by the sun and rain
Of summer, now has yielded grain
In autumn, when the reaper leaves
His cot to cut and bind the sheaves …

So God’s great mercies thus abound;
His love still brings the seasons round;
His blessings fill our happy fields,
And all our land its increase yields:
So if we serve him as we should,
Our Lord will give us all things good;
And he who doth the ravens feed
Much more will give us all we need!

Next Fellowship meal will be November 20!

We are having a Thanksgiving meal.

See you there.
