Eylau United Methodist Church

NEWSLETTER (Feburary 2017)

Our Purpose:

Love God - Love Others - Serve God in the World

The members of Eylau United Methodist Church (EUMC) are seeking the plans God has for our church in the upcoming year.  We will continue with a traditional church worship service, but strive to incorporate other services and activities to encourage Sunday morning worship attendance.  Our 2017 attendance goal of 55 is approximately a 15% increase over the attendance of 2016.  We have set our goal high realizing that even a slight increase in attendance will be a victory for our Lord.

Worship services and activities for 2017 which we hope will boost attendance include:

1.    A better focus on advertising services and activities (Newspaper, Church Sign, RV Park, Newsletter, Radio, Food Pantry)

2.    Pack the Pew Sundays – Sunday School, 5th Sunday Singing Worship service, Noisy Offering (loose change collected by the youth)

3.    A New Adult Sunday School Class (Beginning in March)

4.    Easter Sunrise Service @ 7 AM & Breakfast (Bring your favorite dish), Easter Cantata @ 11 AM (April 16)

5.    Bible Study on Islam and Christianity with Snacks - Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus (begins the 1st Sunday after Easter – April 23)

6.    Special Sunday service and Meal remembering our Veterans within the congregation and the community (Memorial Sunday – May 28)

7.    Barefoot Sunday service – Inviting community youth – Worshippers are invited to go barefoot to remember that not all people have shoes.  Also includes an opportunity to bring shoes for the needy (July)

8.    Vacation Bible School – to be decided (July/August)

9.    Back-to-School (Blessing of the Backpacks) – blessing for students, teachers and school administrators (August)

10. Blessing of the Animals – for worshippers and their pets; includes bringing needed supplies for the local animal shelter (October)

11. A special worship service on All Saints Sunday inviting church members and the community to come and honor loved ones who have gone on to be with the Lord (November 5)

There will be something for everyone.

March 1, is not just another Wednesday.  It is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent.  It is written in the scriptures that Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness.  During that time, he asked himself what it meant to be Jesus.  During the forty days of Lent, Christians are encouraged to ask themselves what it means to be who they are.  A regular part of the Ash Wednesday worship service is the “Invitation To The Observance Of Lenten Discipleship.”  For those of you who wish to understand the season a little better, I extend the invitation.  I hope you will take some time to reflect upon this very important calling:

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ:

the early Christians observed with great devotion

the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection,

and it became the custom of the Church that before the Easter celebration

there should be a forty-day season of spiritual preparation.

During this season converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism.

It was also a time when persons who had committed serious sins

and had separated themselves from the community of faith

were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness,

and restored to participation in the life of the Church.

In this way the whole congregation was reminded

of the mercy and forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel of Jesus Christ and the need we all have to renew our faith.

I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church,

      to observe a holy Lent:

      by self-examination and repentance;

      by prayer, fasting, and self-denial;

and by reading and meditation on God's Holy Word.

Michelangelo didn't say, "I don't do ceilings."

A German monk, named Martin Luther didn't say, "I don't do doors."

An Oxford don named John Wesley didn't say, "I don't do fields."

Moses didn't say, "I don't do Pharaohs."

Noah didn't say, "I don't do arks with animals."

Ruth didn't say, "I don't do mothers-in-law."

Mary didn't say, "I don't do virgin births."

Mary Magdalene didn't say, "I don't do feet."

And Jesus didn't say, "I don't do crosses!"
